J. David Nelms

David Nelms serves as a member of Warren Whitney’s management team of for-profit and not-for-profit clients. He works with firms in the areas of technology and operations, where he provides services ranging from strategic planning to ongoing management of teams and key initiatives. David brings more than 35 years of experience leading organizational change and managing strategic initiatives related to technology and operations. He typically serves clients in the role of interim CIO, COO, or Chief of Staff.

David’s focus is on helping firms maintain cost effectiveness, ensure regulatory compliance, improve internal efficiencies, enhance strategic use of technology, and maintain alignment of technology and operations with corporate objectives and customer needs.
David’s consulting career has spanned over 16 years. Prior to his company’s merger with Warren Whitney in 2015, he was owner and principal consultant of Convergent Business Solutions, a Richmond-based management consulting firm. As part of all his consulting engagements, both with his firm and with Warren Whitney, he has consistently provided a wide variety of leadership services, primarily to mid-sized growth organizations. He has served clients in a wide variety of industries, such as banking and financial services, healthcare, not-for-profit and social services, long-term care, manufacturing and distribution, retail, and information services. The portfolio of firms David has worked with includes local, regional, national, and international companies.
Prior to his consulting roles, David served in senior leadership roles for a variety of organizations. Immediately prior to forming his own company, he was CIO for First Market Bank, a $1.4B regional bank with more than 35 branches. In this role, he acted as a catalyst for organizational change and built the organization’s first internal IT department.
Before joining First Market Bank, David was Assistant Vice President of Store Systems and a corporate officer for Circuit City Stores, Inc., a $10B+ retailer of consumer electronics with more than 600 stores nationwide. In this role he was responsible for teams that developed and supported the company’s extensive suite of custom-developed in-store retail systems.
